What You Need to Know About Optical Power Meter (OPM)

Date: 2026-10-16 14:38:59

Today, high-bandwidth premises networks rely on fiber-optic infrastructure. Proper installation and maintenance of fiber cabling are essential to ensure cabling system performance and reduce troubleshooting time. Whether you need basic fiber verification, advanced troubleshooting, loss/power measurement, or connector end-face inspection, different tools may be required. An optical power meter (OPM) is a common instrument for power and loss testing. When used with a light source, it provides an accurate and cost-effective test solution for fiber-optic networks. This article will help you understand optical power meters.

\

What is an Optical Power Meter?
An optical power meter (OPM) is a test instrument used to accurately measure the optical power emitted by fiber-optic equipment or transmitted through a fiber-optic cable. It also helps determine the optical power loss incurred as the signal passes through the fiber-optic medium. An OPM typically consists of a calibrated sensor, a measurement amplifier circuit, and a display. Optical power is expressed in dBm or mW; relative loss is expressed in dB. OPMs can be used with different connector types, such as SC, ST, and FC, via interchangeable adapters.

\

Types of OPM
There are two common types: standard OPM and PON OPM.
A standard OPM measures optical power in a fiber-optic link at calibrated wavelengths such as 850/1300/1310/1490/1550/1625 nm, depending on the model. Some models also support 980 nm for EDFA-related testing.
A PON OPM can measure optical power at wavelengths used for voice, data, and video services in PONs and supports EPON/GPON testing. It is ideal for PON network construction and maintenance. In addition, some PON OPMs can simultaneously measure all three wavelengths (1310/1490/1550 nm) in a PON; burst-mode capability may be required for upstream 1310 nm signals.

Features and Benefits
Sun Telecom ‘s OPM provides the following features and benefits:
· User self-calibration function
· Auto power off after 10 minutes without operation
· Standard FC/SC/ST interchangeable port
· Backlight LCD for night operation
· REF setting and intelligent backlight control function
· Auto wavelength and frequency identification
· High storage capacity, precision, stability, sensitivity, and durability
· USB communication port for data transfer
· Compact design, easy operation, and easy to use

Applications
OPM is used in telecommunication networks, CATV networks, FTTx networks, PON networks, LAN/WAN, education and research in optical communication, etc.

Conclusion
An OPM is used to measure optical power and, with a light source, optical attenuation; to help verify continuity; and to evaluate fiber-link transmission quality from a power/loss perspective. Depending on the model, it can provide high accuracy, a wide wavelength range, compact design, and ease of operation.
