Optical Performance Monitoring (OPM) for High Speed DWDM Networks

Optical performance monitoring (OPM) provides cost-effective and flexible DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) network solutions. It measures critical information data on optical transmission signals in DWDM networks for monitoring signal dynamics, determining system functionality, identifying performance change, and providing feedback for controlling network elements to optimize operational performance. What is OPM?
OPM is a device that acts as an all-in-one monitor of any WDM optical network, which supports up to 96 channel DWDM optical signal monitoring. It is used for optical performance monitoring analysis of high-speed DWDM signals, including optical wavelength monitoring, optical power monitoring, and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring. By distributing OPM units in critical nodes in the DWDM network, users can easily access key parameters and historical information of each monitored channel through an optimized interface.

How Does OPM Work in DWDM Networks?
In DWDM networks, OPM mainly works to monitor the quality of the data channel by measuring its optical characteristics in real-time. It can ensure correct switching in reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers, set levels for dynamic equalization of the gain of optical amplifiers, and provide system alarms and error warnings for lost or out-of-specification optical channels. In addition, OPM employs proprietary thin-film interference filter technology combined with a micro-actuator and high-speed electronics. To ensure stable and reliable operation of the optical network under multi-channel and high-rate conditions, the wavelength, power, and OSNR of each optical channel signal are monitored by OPM at key locations in the optical network.
